Another place on the grid for the 2018/19 season of Formula E is close to being confirmed: that of José María López. The Argentine driver said he is close to hitting the hammer on staying in the Dragon.
López had participated in the 2016/17 FE season with DS Virgin and not the last year. After the double round of Hong Kong that opened the season, however, was called to the place of Neel Jani. He finished the year with brilliants and only 14 points in ten races. His partner, Jérôme D’Ambrosio, has 27. D’Ambrosio has been in Dragon since the beginning of FE, but will not stay for the next year.
Despite being an important part of Dragon being placed second to last in the Constructors’ Championship, ‘Pechito’ López convinced the Americans.
“It’s both my idea and the team’s. We need to join – and that’s only a matter of time – to confirm that our relationship continues,” he told Motorsport.com.
“It was a year of learning for us – we made great progress and showed on the dim of the year that we have the rhythm to fight for important positions. It will be completely different next year, including a new car.It starts from scratch so maybe we have a a good chance to start from scratch and try to be competitive, “he continued.
The big favorite to be Pechito’s partner in Dragon is Maximilian Günther, currently the Arden team’s F2. Günther even tested the car in one of the team’s private sessions.
For now, only three of the 11 championship teams have confirmed the full pair of drivers: Audi – Lucas Di Grassi and Daniel Abt -, Techeetah – Jean-Éric Vergne and André Lotterer – and Jaguar – Nelsinho Piquet and Mitch Evans.
The season starts only on December 15th.
