Who has had a car rental company take every cent from their account after an accident?

I have twice had my bank accounts emptied by car rental companies. Is this a common practice? I’d recommonend using an account with a very limited balance because the more there is to take the more they will take.

When you sign the rental contract, and refuse the optional insurance that is offered at the rental counter, you are agreeing (as stated in your rental contract) to authorize the car rental company to recoup funds against loss or damage to the rental car, be it against your bank account or credit card.

Maybe with your driving record you should purchase the rental insurance all rental companies offer when you lease a car.
