What do I need to legally become a private hire car driver?

I am looking into becoming a private hire car driver. I have a nice saloon car and have been driving for 6 years. I have read about gettting hackney carriage and private hire licences but are these essential by law or are these optional?

Licence is essential, not an option. You need to speak to your local council about their requirements. Apart from the licence, your car will need to meet certain requirements and you will need the appropriate insurance.

A private hire or a Hackney licence are essential for you to ply for hire. Go to your local council for information on this, I think it`s technical services department.
